Flat fee plus commission: paying influencers based on performance

With the flat fee plus commission model, the creator gets a fixed fee for their work plus a share of the sales they can be shown to have driven. That way brand and creator share the risk: the production is paid for, and whoever sells well earns more.

Three ways to pay an influencer

There are basically three models. With a flat fee, the brand pays an agreed amount for the deliverable, regardless of the result. With commission only, the creator earns only on the sales made through their code or link. Flat fee plus commission combines both: a fixed fee, usually lower than with a pure fixed price, plus a commission on the sales driven. Which model fits depends on the goal. For pure awareness, a flat fee is common; for sales, the performance-based models are a good choice.

Why commission only is rarely enough for creators

Commission only sounds tempting to brands because they only pay when it works. For creators, though, it means they deliver the idea, the shoot and the edit at their own risk. If the product does not fit the audience or the shop converts poorly, they walk away with nothing — even though they did their work. Many experienced creators therefore turn down such offers. A fixed fee for the production plus commission is fairer for both sides: the creator is paid for their work, and the brand only pays the larger part once sales actually happen.

Performance influencers: what has to be settled beforehand

For the model to work, a few points have to be clear. How are sales attributed — through a dedicated code, a link or both? What does the commission apply to — net sales after returns or the order value? How long after the post do sales still count? And when is a sale considered confirmed, meaning after which period for returns? Without these rules, disputes arise later over every single order. So write the rules into the brief or the agreement before the creator starts.

Affiliate influencer pay: validation period and term

Two time frames shape every commission agreement. The term sets how long after acceptance sales are credited to the creator. The validation period is the window for returns and cancellations: only after it ends is a reported sale considered confirmed and the commission payable. For brands, this protects against commissions on goods that get sent back; for creators, it means part of their earnings only comes in later. The creator should know both time frames before accepting, so they can judge what they are getting into.

Flat fee plus commission on creatordeal

On creatordeal, besides the regular listing, there is an affiliate listing with a performance commission. Under compensation you choose “Fee + commission”: the flat fee is the fixed price per creator, and you add the commission rate, term and validation period. The commission only arises once a sale has been reported and confirmed after the validation period; until then it is purely reporting. The platform sets a range for the rate. This option is not available to every account right away — whether it is unlocked for you, you can see in your listings area.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Key answers at a glance. Everything else is in the guides and in the FAQ.

What does flat fee plus commission mean for influencers?

The creator gets a fixed fee for their work plus a share of the sales they can be shown to have driven, for example through a dedicated code or link.

What is a typical influencer commission rate?

That depends heavily on industry, product and margin; there is no universal rate. What matters is that the rate, the basis, the term and the validation period are clearly agreed beforehand.

Is commission-only fair for influencers?

For creators it is risky, because they do their work even if nothing sells. A fixed fee plus commission shares the risk more fairly between brand and creator.

When is the commission paid out?

Only once a sale is confirmed, meaning after the agreed validation period for returns has ended. Canceled or returned orders do not count.

Can I agree on a flat fee plus commission on creatordeal?

Yes, through an affiliate listing with the “Fee + commission” compensation. The feature is not automatically unlocked for every account.
